busoshoku haki — otherwise known as armament haki, which allows the user to use their own aura as armor to defend against attacks, as well as make their own attacks more potent.

character overview

"red-haired" shanks, commonly known as just "red hair" or "akagami," is the chief of the red hair pirates and one of the four emperors that rule over the new world.

born to the figarland family of the world nobles, shanks is the son of figarland garling and the younger twin brother of figarland shamrock. however, as an infant, shanks was discovered by the roger pirates at god valley, sometime after the god valley incident. shanks was then adopted and raised onboard the oro jackson, beginning his pirate career within roger's crew as an apprentice alongside buggy, before forming his own crew following roger's death 24 years ago and renouncing his birthright as a celestial dragon.

twelve years ago, while operating in the east blue, shanks inspired a young monkey d. luffy to go on his own pirate journey, thus being responsible for the boy becoming the notorious outlaw he is today. he accidentally provided luffy with the gomu gomu no mi to eat, and even sacrificed his left arm to save him from being eaten by the lord of the coast out at sea.

most notably, he also owned the straw hat that once belonged to gol d. roger himself and has become luffy's signature accessory, having gifted it to the boy as part of a promise for them to meet again someday. following the downfall of his rival emperors in wano country, shanks has set his sights on claiming the one piece.

trivia

Shanks is the only member of the Four Emperors, in any of their known line-ups, to not have eaten a Devil Fruit. there are also no devil fruit users on his main crew.
While he had the lowest bounty among the Emperors at the start of the series, in the present day his bounty is now the highest.
In Shanks' bounty of 4,048,900,000, the 4-8-9 can be read as shi-ya-ku (シヤク). This could refer to his given name "Shanks" (シャンクス).
though he was born of celestial dragon blood, he was separated from the figarland family at a young age. gol d. roger found shanks as an infant among a pile of treasure, and thus raised him on the oro jackson like a son. while shanks is aware of his celestial dragon heritage, he chose to continue being a pirate.

what is an emperor of the sea? an emperor, otherwise known as yonko (四皇), is a pirate who is considered one of the most notorious and powerful captains in the world. moreover, there are only four pirates that are given this title at a time; no more, no less. currently, the four emperors are: red-haired shanks, buggy the star clown, marshall d. teach, and monkey d. luffy. each emperor governs over a large number of territories, who rely on them for protection. they often also have several other pirate crews allied under them, forming a fleet.shanks' territories include elbaf and gartel island, among many others. unlike many of the former emperors, shanks is well-respected and admired for being protective of his territories, and moreso of the people who reside in them. he does not take kindly to anyone looking to cause a stir, and is swift in his punishments regardless of what he thinks of the transgressor.
